Description

On April 7, 1815 a charter to incorporate the City of Saratoga Springs was passed into law. One hundred years later, the City celebrated its centennial with a pocket park addition to Congress Park. Underwritten by Saratoga’s “first couple,” Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, Centennial Park provides a beautifully landscaped welcome to visitors replete with water fountains and inviting benches. Prominently featured atop the striking black granite ‘Welcome to Saratoga Springs’ sign, resides a bronze statue of celebrated Thoroughbred Native Dancer and jockey Eric Guerin, custom-designed by equine artist Gwen Reardon. Undefeated at Saratoga Race Course, William Winfrey, Native Dancer’s trainer, once called the horse a once-in-a-century Thoroughbred – a suitable way to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary.
