Description

Moon’s Lake House was a restaurant on Saratoga Lake, built in 1853, and is the alleged birth place of the potato chip, a.k.a. the Saratoga Chip. According to legend, visiting restaurant patron Cornelius Vanderbuilt was displeased with his fried potatoes and repeatedly sent the order back to the kitchen, claiming they were much too thick. At first, Moon’s Lake House chef, George Crum, attempted to appease the diner sending out ever thinner potatoes. After several attempts, however, the insulted chef shaved the potatoes paper thin and fried them in oil. Instead of being offended, Vanderbuilt loved the result, which became a house specialty, and so the Saratoga Chip was born!
