Description

Come with us back in time and check into the Grand Union Hotel. Originally built as a boarding house in 1802, it grew to become one of the most renowned summer resort hotels. By 1876 it had grown to cover seven acres and claimed the title ‘world’s largest hotel’ accommodating 2000 guests. With its elaborate décor it was among the first to have electricity, indoor plumbing and elevators. The grounds included several piazzas, an opera house, ballrooms, gardens, dining rooms, billiards and reading rooms, saloons, wine storage and bowling alleys. It attracted millionaires, politicians, literary and stage figures, even Presidents. Following the onset of the Depression and World War II it became increasingly difficult to maintain the hotel and, sadly, in 1952 the hotel was set for demolition and furnishings sold for well below their value.
