Description

Visit this landmark and you’ll feel its importance as well as some of the ghosts of the battlefield. Built in 1877 it stands 155 feet and commemorates the 1777 Battle of Saratoga. Recognized as a turning point in the American Revolution, this area where the British army surrendered led to a critical American victory creating the foundation for the overall success of the revolution.

On each side of this granite obelisk there is a niche bearing statues honoring the commanders contributing to this victory. Facing North-General Horatio Gates, the overall commander of the forces; East-General Philip Schuyler, our local commanding officer (depicted in the ornament); West-Colonel Daniel Morgan, leader of the infantry. Infamously missing to the South is the niche intended for General Benedict Arnold who turned traitor to the cause only two years later in 1780. Providing majestic views at the top of its 184 steps, it is an integral part of the Saratoga National Historical Park and our area’s valued history.
